Jacobus Hollewijn was born in The Netherlands. He moved to the United States in 1985 with his wife and small family. There has always been an interest in food, either professionally as a chef for many years, or because of personal interest. Experimenting with a variety of diets, including Vegetarianism, Macrobiotics, Raw Foods, Blood-Type and good-ol’ American Cuisine, Jacobus has a basic dietary knowledge, and has helped, advised and supported people with his culinary background.
Since 1994, living in Bozeman, Montana, he has been involved in health food retail, by becoming General Manager at one of the larger local health food stores. He also helped two other area natural foods stores as organizer and educator of their vitamins and supplement department.
On April 6, 2007 Jacobus and his wife Marielle, opened their own store, called “Gesundheit! With Jacobus Nutrition Center”, named after his show with the same name, which started in 2000. “Gesundheit” is a German word meaning “health” or “good health”. This 2,100sq.ft. shop only offers high-quality dietary supplements. Another emphasis is on education and service by a knowledgeable staff, and on networking within the health community.
His radio career started in 1996 with weekly advertisements on several local radio stations. These ads, called Health Pearls, are little pearls of wisdom about health, without mentioning a product, price or company. Originally written in a 30-seconds format they quickly became a full minute, changing every week.
Another avenue for Jacobus to share his knowledge has been by contributing half-page common sense articles about health, healing and healthy lifestyles, important issues that affect us all.
On July 9, 2000 he started a weekly live radio show, called Gesundheit!…With Jacobus, every Sunday morning. The program consisted of interviews with experts, professionals and doctors in both western/allopathic medicine as well as those specializing in all-natural/alternative modalities. The program is was well received, both by the listeners as well as the experts who participate in the interview; not only because of its entertainment value but primarily because of the thorough approach into many of today’s pressing health-issues. Jacobus’ meticulous preparation for each program made him very comfortable during any interview and has gained him the respect and trust from his many faithful listeners. In 2009 the show was ranked #1 on Sunday morning.
As of November 14, 2009 this popular program was moved to Saturday mornings from 8:00-11:00MST, and was ranked #1 amongst 16 radio stations (for two out of three hours) between 2014 and 2018, at times reaching 35-43% of all listeners!
At this point Jacobus is working on the next chapter of broadcasting, which hasn’t materialized itself to date, but has been awaited eagerly by some.
Starting in August of 2000 he was able to display another talent: he was hired as the first varsity coach of a local area high school girls’ soccer team, the Belgrade Panthers. In his sixth, and final, year at the helm (in 2005), they won their first State Championship.
Marielle and Jacobus are happily married and have three great children, four grandchildren, and two grand-dogs.
