Lately, I’ve explained how our digestive tract separates nutrients from fibers and non-broken-down particles.

Perhaps you are now wondering, how nutrients make it all the way to our cells?

Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fats, sugars, and even herbs pass through microscopic openings in the small intestine, into the PORTAL VEIN. This is part of an intricate blood  system that also connects to our stomach, pancreas, and spleen.

The PORTAL VEIN leads to the liver, located on the right side of our body, midway between our waist and armpit. The liver weighing between THREE and THREE-AND-A-HALF pounds, is considered a vital organ, because of its many functions–experts say there are about five-hundred!

We all have our own sensitivities to what we eat and drink, because we are all different! But eventually, our liver has to process whatever makes it into the bloodstream.

I’ll explain more about the liver’s important functions next week.

Meanwhile, if you feel the need to love your liver a little bit more, then check-out our liver supplements …at the Gesundheit! Nutrition Center on North 19th Avenue.
